NEW StarOffice 7

First Impressions

StarOffice from Sun MicroSystems just keeps getting better and clearly now threatens the dominance of the key player in this market-Microsoft! If you are struggling to find the finances to install an office suite across all your school systems, the new StarOffice 7 at just over £20 for the media pack is the answer. As with StarOffice 6 four main applications are included; StarWriter (WordProcessor),  StarDraw (Vector based package),  Starcalc (Spreadsheet)  and Impress (Presentation). My first impressions are very positive and for education users the main enhancements are as follows:

bulletFresher interface. The button bars and menus have had a makeover
bulletFaster. It loads roughly twice as fast as StarOffice 6
bulletIt exports to PDF and the results are very impressive. I exported a large complicated document with no errors.
bulletExports to Macromedia Flash
bulletEven better import/export to Microsoft equivalents, although I had no issues with reading/exporting MS files in StarOffice 6.  This conversion includes XP versions of Office!
